What is cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery focuses on enhancing a person’s appearance and improves the aesthetic appeal in a specific area of the body. Often, the goal of cosmetic surgery is add symmetry and proper proportion and add a more youthful appearance. It is therefore considered an elective surgery.

Though closely related to plastic and reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery is aimed at changing someone’s aesthetic appeal in the face and most areas of the body. For women, there are a variety of cosmetic procedures for the breast, including augmentation, lift, reduction, and revision.

For the face, anyone can get help changing the shape and size of their brows, eyes, face, neck and nose. There’s liposuction and tummy tuck, two of the more popular cosmetic procedures today. You can also receive skin rejuvenation with the use of filler injections and laser resurfacing.

Breasts Surgery

Women can feel self-conscious when it comes to their breasts regardless of their size and shape. There are a number of breast enhancement procedures available to women, including augmentation, lift, reduction, and reconstruction. There is even gynecomastia, breast reduction for men.

Head/Face Surgery

The majority of all cosmetic surgeries are performed in the head area with a facelift being one of the most popular options. There is facial rejuvenation that can include not only a facelift but also an eyelid lift, brow lift, and neck lift. For a facial contouring, you can get a rhinoplasty or chin or cheek enhancement.

For people who feel their ears are too big or disproportional can elect to get an ear pinning or ear reshaping procedure done. For your mouth, there is an oral and maxillofacial surgery. If you need relief from sinusitis, there is nasal surgery. Or not happy with the shape of your nose, you can choose nose reshaping surgery.

Among other options for facial and head procedures are chin, cheek or jaw reshaping, facial implants, lip augmentation, cleft lip and cleft palate and craniosynostosis. You can even get hair replacement surgery.

Body Contouring Surgery

There are a few alternatives when it comes to the stomach area, including the popular liposuction and tummy tuck as well as gynecomastia treatment.

Skin Rejuvenation Surgery

From Botox and laser resurfacing to filler treatments, there are many options when it comes to improving the appearance of your skin. Filler injections have several products like Restylane and Radiesse as well as collagen/fat injectable fillers. With peels, there is chemical, glycolic and laser peels among the many choices.

Dermabrasion is an exfoliating technique that takes advantage of a rotating instrument to remove the outer layers of your skin. You can have vein removal, scar revision or even tattoo removal as other skin cosmetic procedures that can improve the quality of your life.

What is plastic and reconstructive surgery?

A reconstructive surgery helps to improve body function, a more even and normal appearance and self-esteem. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there are more than one million reconstructive surgery procedures done each year.

Reconstructive plastic surgery focuses on repairing facial and body abnormalities and defects and correcting dysfunctional areas of your body to give you a more normal appearance. There are many reasons why you may need a reconstructive procedure from birth disorders to sudden traumatic injury. It could be simply an aging issue, an infection, or to treat a disease or tumor.

Breast

Breast Reconstruction: This surgery can restore breasts to their normal shape and size, especially after a mastectomy. Breast reconstruction is performed either using breast implants or the patient’s own tissue from another part of the body.

Breast Reduction: This procedure eradicates excess breast fat and skin for a result in which the breast size matches the proportion of the body as well as provide pain relief from large breasts. Breast reduction can be performed on men and women.

Burn Repair Surgery

There are several types of burn repair surgeries depending on your specific circumstances. Skin graft allows the surgeon to remove skin from one area of the body to another location. A free flap procedure sees the transfer of skin, bone or muscle with the original blood from one area of the body, the donor site, to the surgical location, the recipient site.

Congenital Heart Defect Surgery

Some child’s murmurs can mean that the blood is not flowing through the heart normally and can result in a heart defect. Depending on what type of defect the child is suffering through, there are different options to treat congenital heart defects.

It can be repaired using catheterization techniques that prevent a surgeon from surgically opening the chest and heart by inserting a catheter into a vein and guide it to the heart with X-ray images. But sometimes, open-heart surgery is necessary and the chest has to be opened to fix the defect. When the most serious heart defect cannot be repaired, a heart transplant is a possible solution.

Scar Revision Surgery

There is a wide variety of treatments available from minimally invasive to surgical revision to minimize the appearance of a scar and make it harmonize with the surrounding skin.

Cleft Lip/Palate Surgery

This procedure helps to correct abnormal development caused by birth defects and restore a normal appearance in a child. Cleft lip and cleft palate are the most common birth defects.

Microsurgery

A microsurgery involves the reattaching of a specific body part whether a finger or a toe. The surgeon sews blood vessels or nerves to repair damaged arteries or nerves. There is also a tissue expander in which an instrument is inserted under the skin near the area that needs repair. This “balloon” is filled with a saline solution and gradually stretches to eventually allow the damaged area to be reconstructed.

Hand Surgery

There are a number of reasons why someone may need a hand surgery to treat some diseases like Dupuytren’s Contracture that causes pain to the patient and impairs the function of the wrists and fingers. Treatment of conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis can improve the quality of life.

Lower Extremity Reconstruction

This procedure allows people to feel sensation and movement again in a leg or foot that has suffered a major injury. Lower extremity reconstruction lets the surgeon transfer muscle, nerve and vascular tissues from another area of the body to the injured location and reconnecting the blood supply to restore nerve structures. The result is normal function and appearance to the injured ankle, leg or foot.
